About

Hi, I'm Haytham Khalil

IoT Solutions Architect & BMS Integration Specialist

I’m an IoT and building automation engineer. I build the software that connects field devices, networks and cloud platforms, from gateway drivers that speak BACnet and Modbus to the pipelines that carry their data securely to the cloud.

My path runs through thirteen years of network and communications engineering, a Ph.D. in IoT, and hands-on work on smart-building gateways. That mix means I’m comfortable across firmware, embedded Linux, networking, cloud integration and data visualisation, and I like problems that cross those boundaries.

Today I’m also building IoTOcean, my independent technology brand, where I’m developing products for router fleets, Linux edge devices, network provisioning, BACnet testing, connected audio and AI-powered speech processing.

What I work on

Problems I like to solve

Getting building data to the cloud

Integrating BACnet, Modbus, Haystack and vendor systems into gateways that deliver reliable, secure data to analytics platforms.

Networks that stay up

Designing multi-site networks, VPNs and secure Wi-Fi, and automating how they are configured and monitored.

Devices at the edge

Firmware and embedded Linux software for gateways and smart devices that keep working when the cloud link doesn’t.

Voice and intelligence for IoT

Making connected systems easier to use, from voice-controlled devices over SIP to on-device anomaly detection.

Experience

Where I've worked

May 2023 – present

Intermediate Developer

CopperTree Analytics Inc. · Surrey, BC

  • Develop software for gateway devices that collect building automation data (BACnet, Haystack, StruxureWare, Modbus, EnteliWEB) and transmit it securely to a cloud analytics platform.
  • Design gateway architecture for robust protocol integration, efficient data flow and secure cloud communication.
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines for automated testing, deployment and over-the-air updates.

Apr 2021 – Apr 2023

Network Manager

Storwell Self Storage · Mississauga, ON

  • Designed, installed and administered the Rook hotel’s network: Ethernet, fibre, routers, switches, firewalls, VoIP, UPS and CCTV.
  • Delivered private guest Wi-Fi with MikroTik CAPsMAN, WPA2-Enterprise and dynamic per-suite VLANs; secured the network with Fortinet NGFW, IPS and SD-WAN.
  • Built REST APIs integrating MikroTik, Fortinet and FreeRADIUS with booking and payment systems, and a cloud IoT system for in-room device control.

Jan 2020 – Oct 2023

Ph.D. Researcher

IoT Research Lab, Ontario Tech University · Oshawa, ON

  • Researched Phone of Things (PoT), bridging IoT and VoIP through the SIP protocol.
  • Designed tSIP, a lightweight SIP protocol for resource-constrained embedded IoT devices, and a blockchain-based device authentication mechanism.

Jan 2020 – Dec 2023

Teaching Assistant

Ontario Tech University · Oshawa, ON

  • Taught programming (C, C++, Python), Android development, web programming and distributed systems through weekly tutorials.

Jun 2006 – Dec 2019

Network & Communications Engineer

Petroleum Pipelines Company · Alexandria, Egypt

  • Designed and managed nationwide LAN, WAN and voice services, including Cisco Unified Communications and Asterisk/FreePBX.
  • Administered Fortinet firewalls and VPNs; led SCADA, VHF/UHF and private data-network integration projects across distributed sites.

Education

Research and education

2020 – 2023

Ph.D., Electrical and Computer Engineering

Ontario Tech University · Oshawa, ON

Thesis research: Phone of Things (PoT), bridging IoT and VoIP technologies. Supervisor: Dr. Khalid Elgazzar, Canada Research Chair in the Internet of Things.

2007 – 2012

M.Sc., Electronics and Communications Engineering

Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport · Alexandria

Thesis: Employees’ admission control and potential performance evaluation using a wirelessly maintained distributed door-entry system.

1999 – 2004

B.Sc., Communications and Electronics Engineering

Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University

Research focus: Phone of Things

My doctoral research connected IoT systems to the telephone network, so devices can be reached and controlled through ordinary phone calls and voice commands. It produced tSIP, a lightweight SIP protocol for constrained devices, and a series of peer-reviewed papers.

Publications

Nine papers on IoT, VoIP, embedded Linux and data visualisation (2011–2023).

Certificates

Continuous learning across Python, embedded systems, DevOps, networking, IoT and BACnet.
